18th BFSU - WANHUIDA IP Moot Court Competition held in Beijing

From 23rd to 24th May 2026, the 18th “BFSU - WANHUIDA Cup” Intellectual Property Moot Court Competition” (Moot Court Competition), which is jointly organised by the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and China Legal Exchange Foundation, sponsored by Wanhuida Intellectual Property, is held at the BFSU campus.

 

The Moot Court Competition attracts 16 competing teams, including 4 foreign teams from San Martín de Porres University of Peru, Strathmore University of Kenya, Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church of Hungary and Hanoi Law University of Vietnam, as well as 12 Chinese team from Peking University School of Transnational Law, Beihang University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Hebei University, East China University of Political Science and Law, Nankai University, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, TongJi University, China Foreign Affairs University, China University of Political Science and Law, University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and the BFSU.

 

On Saturday May 23rd, the opening ceremony, which is hosted by Professor Ding Xiangshun, Dean of the BFSU Law School, is held.

Opening ceremony

 

The debate of this year’s moot court competition focuses on the cancellation action against a Chinese registered trademark in a cross-border business setting, for non-use for three consecutive years. The case pertains to the assessment over trademark user, the impact exerted by the will of the trademark registrant over the trademark use act, as well as the international norms established by the TRIPS Agreement over trademark use. It addresses, in particular, the boundary of application over genuine use as introduced in Article 49.2 of China’s Trademark Law.

 

Wanhuida Partner Lei Yongjian, along with Professor Li Mingde, Doctoral Supervisor at IP Center of Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Professor Yan Wenjun, Deputy Dean and Doctoral Supervisor at IP Institute of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Du Ying, Doctoral Supervisor, Director of IP Centre of Central University of Finance and Economics, Professor Jin Haijun, Doctoral Supervisor, Law School of Renmin University of China, Associate Professor Jiang Ge, Doctoral Supervisor, Law School of Tsinghua University, Assistant Professor Bian Renjun, Law School of Peking University, and two other veteran practitioners serve as the judges.

After a heated contest, the team of China University of Political Science and Law wins the championship, the team of Hanoi Law University of Vietnam wins the runner-up, and the teams of Beihang University and East China University of Political Science and Law tie for the second runner-up.

 

On Sunday May 24th, the winners of the “Best Memorial Awards”, the “Best Oralists” and the “Outstanding Oralists” are also unveiled at the closing ceremony. Professors Li Mingde and Du Ying present the awards to the winning teams and winners.

The ceremony is hosted by Liu Lijuan, Director of Intellectual Property Center, BFSU Law School. Lei Yongjian, on behalf of the distinguished guests serving as judges of the moot court competition, commends the outstanding performance of all the contestants.

Winning teams are eligible for the cash prize offered by “Wanhuida IP Awards”, a program created by the title sponsor to commend individuals with exceptional academic achievements and profound understanding in intellectual property law. Winning teams are also offered internship opportunities at Wanhuida on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

The BFSU - WANHUIDA IP Moot Court Competition is the only English competition that strictly abides by the rules for international moot court and focuses on international intellectual property laws in China. Wanhuida has been its sponsor since its first competition in 2008.
